Know the real appointment

The official exam has 80 total items.

FINRA lists 75 scored multiple-choice questions on its public SIE page. The current content outline adds an important detail: each candidate receives five additional, unidentified pretest items. That makes the appointment 80 items in total, with 105 minutes to finish.

FINRA currently says the SIE is open to anyone age 18 or older, no firm association is required, and a passing result remains valid for four years. Passing the SIE alone does not qualify someone for registration or permission to conduct securities business.

Practice without false certainty

One complete form, three useful modes.

  • Full 80: an appointment-length simulation with a 1:45:00 clock.
  • Blueprint 25: a shorter checkpoint weighted across all four official sections.
  • Quick 10: a low-friction session for study breaks and re-entry days.
  • Immediate rationales: learn why the answer works instead of memorizing a letter.
  • Mistake vault: collect missed or uncertain ideas for later retrieval.
  • Private-by-default progress: practice remains on the device unless you explicitly connect account sync.

Honest limit: this beta contains one original appointment-length form. Repeating it can create memory of the bank rather than fresh evidence of readiness. Use another current, comprehensive source before making a high-stakes scheduling decision.

First 75 questions

Coverage follows FINRA’s scored blueprint.

The final five Role by Role questions are mixed-section practice. They occupy the same number of positions as the real appointment’s unidentified pretest items, but they are not presented as psychometrically equivalent to FINRA’s pretest process.

A better feedback loop

Use the practice form to find the next decision.

  1. Take the first attempt closed-book. Choose Full 80 only when you can protect the entire session.
  2. Mark uncertainty honestly. A lucky correct answer belongs in review just as much as a miss.
  3. Read the rationale in both directions. Explain why the correct choice works and why your original choice fails.
  4. Repair the concept in plain language. Write one rule, the clue you missed, and a nearby trap.
  5. Retrieve it after a delay. Return tomorrow, then lengthen the gap after a successful recall.

Do not chase a streak. Role by Role preserves progress after missed days and uses recent learning actions as context, not as a punishment system.

Build a retrieval-first 21-day SIE plan.

Planning target vs. real appointment

Give yourself a target before you buy urgency.

A private target date can create structure immediately. Record an official appointment only after you have actually enrolled and scheduled through FINRA’s current process. Role by Role keeps those two states separate so a study intention is never misrepresented as a booked exam.

Before scheduling, look for stable performance across multiple fresh, timed forms, narrowing mistakes, complete blueprint coverage, and the ability to explain major rules without seeing answer choices. No single third-party percentage can guarantee an official result.

Use the appointment decision guide, then review FINRA’s current enrollment options.

SIE practice questions

Frequently asked questions.

How many questions are on the SIE exam?

FINRA’s current outline says each appointment contains 80 total items: 75 scored multiple-choice questions and five additional unidentified pretest items that do not count toward the score.

How long is the SIE exam?

FINRA currently allows one hour and 45 minutes, or 105 minutes, to complete the SIE exam.

Do I need a firm to sponsor me for the SIE?

No. FINRA currently permits anyone age 18 or older to take the SIE without association with a firm. Passing the SIE alone does not authorize securities business or replace a representative-level qualification exam.

Does Role by Role predict whether I will pass the SIE?

No. Practice performance is a study signal, not a pass probability or guarantee. Use more than one fresh, current, timed practice form and confirm current requirements with FINRA.

Evidence and limits

Original practice—not official exam content.

The practice questions are original Role by Role material mapped to FINRA’s current outline. They are not recalled, copied, or represented as actual FINRA questions. Automated structural and source audits pass, but independent securities subject-matter approval of the exact bank remains required before public launch.

Exam requirements can change. Verify dates, fees, enrollment, accommodations, testing rules and retake policies with FINRA and its designated testing provider before acting.
